4,000 People Expected TOMORROW at 14 sites from the Mountains to the Sea

PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE ORIGINAL CLEANUP SITE

WHAT: Councilmember Ed P. Reyes will join thousands from 9 a.m.-Noon for Friends of the Los Angeles River's (FoLAR) annual Great Los Angeles River CleanUp, La Gran Limpieza, as it turns 20 tomorrow. (LIST OF CLEANUP SITES BELOW)

WHEN: Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 9 a.m.

WHERE: 3207 Los Feliz Blvd, adjacent to the Municipal Golf Course and Los Feliz Café

WHO: Los Angeles City Councilmember Ed P. Reyes, Assemblymembers Paul Krekorian and Kevin De Leòn, Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and FoLAR Founder and Board Chair, Lewis MacAdams, more than 400 participants.

DETAILS: What began with 30 stalwarts at one site has grown into the largest urban river cleanup in the country. This year 4,000 people will gather along the 52-mile River, from Tujunga Wash in the San Gabriel Mountains foothills to the Golden Shore Wetlands in Long Beach. In the past 19 years an estimated 40,000 people have converged on the River and its tributaries to haul out 250 tons of garbage that would otherwise have washed into the Pacific Ocean.

CleanUp sites are located primarily in natural-bottom areas where trash becomes entangled in vegetation. Each has its own unique character and live music. Disposable gloves, trash sacks, snacks and water are provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty, to bring a reusable water bottle, work gloves, sunscreen and hats. The first 100 people at each site receive a 20th Anniversary CleanUp t-shirt and all participants receive a reusable shopping bag courtesy of Earthwise Reusable Bag.
